The Company You Keep: Do Your Companions Speak Life?
The Christian Professional Journal is here to offer faith-based insights and encouragement to help you navigate work and life with purpose. Together, we’ll explore how to keep Faith First, Excellence Always, as we grow and walk boldly in God’s calling.
Your soul needs wise counsel.
And not everyone deserves a voice in your life.
That might sound harsh, but it’s wisdom. Biblical wisdom.
Proverbs 13:20 says,
“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.”
The people closest to you influence not only your decisions, but your direction. Their words matter. Their presence matters. And over time, their counsel will shape your path—for better or worse.
I've learned this firsthand. Sometimes, we don’t fully realize the weight of someone’s voice in our life until we’re in a storm. It’s in those moments you discover:
Who stands with you?
Who understands the call of God on your life?
Who speaks life and biblical truth when your heart is weary?
Proverbs 12:26 says,
“The righteous should choose his friends carefully,
For the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
You don’t need a crowd of companions.
Just a few.
The ones who root for you in the good times.
And in the hard times, they don’t walk away. They draw near.
Proverbs 27:9 says,
“Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.”
Real friends pray with you. They give godly counsel.
They’re patient when your path is unclear.
They rejoice when you walk into a new endeavor.
And it’s never a taker's relationship—you see it in how they live, the sacrifices they’ve made to follow Jesus, and the love they pour out for others.
That’s how you know who’s good for your soul:
They cover you in prayer.
They seek the Word.
They sharpen.
They sit with you when life gets tough.
Proverbs 17:17 reminds us:
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
At the same time, we also have a responsibility:
What voices are you allowing into your life?
What words are you speaking into others?
Are you building people up, or letting your words tear down?
We are accountable for our boundaries.
We’re called to be wise with the company we keep, and the company we are.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” —Proverbs 18:21
So today I encourage you:
Reflect on the voices you’ve been listening to.
Re-center your circle around Christ.
Speak life into others, especially when they’re in a valley.
Through the years, I've seen who’s remained, those who’ve prayed, encouraged, and stood with me even when the road was narrow. If that’s you, thank you. You have no idea how much your support means.
Your messages, your prayers, your reviews… means a lot!!!
I’m praying for the Lord’s hand over your life, your work, your family, and your calling.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Let Your favor surround them like a shield (Psalm 5:12). May their steps be ordered by You, and may You delight in their way (Psalm 37:23). Bless the work of their hands, cause it to flourish. Let their household be filled with peace, provision, and the presence of Your Spirit. Guard their family and strengthen every relationship with wisdom and love (Proverbs 24:3–4). Lord, where You have called them, equip them. And when discouragement comes, let Your Word speak louder, knowing that You who began a good work will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). Let their life shine for You and their path align with Your will. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.
