When You Know What Needs to Be Done… But God Says “Wait Here”
The Christian Professional Journal is here to offer faith-based insights and encouragement to help you navigate work and life with purpose. Together, we’ll explore how to keep Faith First, Excellence Always, as we grow and walk boldly in God’s calling.
Have you ever found yourself in a place where you know what needs to be done. A significant task to complete, a calling to pursue, a step to take, but deep down, you sense that now is not the time?
It’s just that there’s something God is asking you to focus on first. One thing. One assignment. One soul. One act of obedience.
This is the space between clarity and completion.
Where waiting becomes an act of faith.
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
God’s purposes are developed through time.
In Exodus, Moses knew his calling was to deliver Israel, yet he spent forty years in the wilderness tending sheep. What seemed like a detour was actually divine preparation. God was training Moses' hands for leadership and shaping his heart for humility. Deliverance came through obedience.
David, too, was anointed king while still a young shepherd boy. The oil of calling flowed early but the crown would not come for many years. In between, he served a king who despised him, hid in caves, and faced betrayal and hunger. Yet in that waiting, God was forming in David the character of a man after His own heart. The wilderness was the proving ground of royalty.
Even Jesus, the Son of God, perfect and sinless waited. At twelve, He was found in the temple, astonishing the teachers with His understanding. And yet, He did not begin His public ministry until He was thirty. The Savior of the world lived in obscurity, working as a carpenter, submitting to His earthly parents, waiting for the appointed time. It was obedience to the Father’s timing.
Why the wait?
Because timing with God is preparation, and in the waiting that faith is forged and dependence deepens.
Sometimes, you might know the big thing that needs to be done. Maybe it’s a ministry, a business, a family breakthrough. But there’s a funding gap that must be closed. A spiritual discipline to be rebuilt. A heart that needs aligning before the hands can get to work.
So, how do we deal with the weight of knowing, but not yet doing?
There’s a kind of weight only those with a calling understand. When you know what God has shown you, but you haven’t yet stepped into it. You’ve seen glimpses. You’ve prayed. You’ve prepared. But the “doing” still feels distant.
So how do we walk faithfully in the in-between?
1. Recognize the waiting as part of the calling.
David was anointed king as a teenager, but he didn’t sit on the throne until years later. In the meantime? He served Saul. He hid in caves. He fought battles and faced Goliath. He wrote psalms in the wilderness. The crown didn’t come instantly, but the calling never left.
“And the Lord said, ‘Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!’” 1 Samuel 16:12
God often uses the delay to shape the vessel He intends to use.
2. Do what you can with what’s in your hands.
David shepherded with care, fought lions, honored authority, played music to calm tormented hearts, and stood for truth when no one else would. His faithfulness in the small things made room for the greater.
Obedience begins with preparation, for faith without preparation is like a lamp with no oil.
3. Let God determine the timing.
Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in Your hand.”
That dream, project, assignment or step forward, God knows when it will come to pass. His timing is perfect. And sometimes what feels like silence is actually alignment, of people, places, and provision.
4. Cast the weight on Jesus.
Carrying the “knowing” alone can feel heavy, but remember what Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
He carries the timing. You carry the trust.
Reflection Questions:
Is there a clear “one thing” God is asking me to focus on right now?
Have I recognized the waiting as part of God's preparation?
Am I willing to surrender the outcome to His timeline?
How can I remain faithful in the small things while I wait?
What Scripture can I cling to in this season of trust and obedience?
Action Points:
Write it down. List the things you feel responsible for, and circle the one you know the Lord is spotlighting now. Give it your full obedience.
Release the rest. Surrender every “what if” and “when, Lord?” to His hands. He sees the full picture.
Strengthen your spirit. Revisit Scriptures about timing, obedience, and trust (e.g. Psalm 27:14, Isaiah 40:31, Proverbs 3:5–6).
Take the next small faithful step. Not everything requires immediate results. Sometimes, the holiest thing you can do is wait well.
Prayer:
Lord, I know there is work to be done, but You know the order.
Help me trust Your pace. Quiet the noise of urgency and comparison, and center me on the one thing You’re asking of me today. Even when I don’t see progress, remind me that patience in You is never wasted. Teach me to walk in step with Your Spirit, not ahead of it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
