“Do not worry about your life…” (Matt. 6:25)
Even in the time of Jesus, people worried about the basics of life. What to eat, what to wear, how to survive tomorrow. And in Matthew 6, Jesus speaks directly to the heart of this fear.
Jesus commands this three times in this passage, He says:
“Do not worry.”
Verse 25: Stop worrying.
Verse 31: Don’t start.
Verse 34: Trust God with tomorrow.
In Matthew 6:25–34, Jesus directly addressed worry, showing not only empathy but offering a pathway to peace:
“Do not worry about your life... Look at the birds of the air... your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Matthew 6:25–26
He continues:
Worry doesn’t add a single hour to your life (v. 27)
God knows your needs before you even ask (v. 32)
Your job is to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness” and all else will follow (v. 33)
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Matthew 6:34
Why? Because worry denies three essential truths about God:
1. He Provides
“Look at the birds of the air… your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
The birds don’t hoard seed. They don’t obsess over tomorrow. And yet, they’re fed. How much more will your heavenly Father care for you?
He knows your needs. He knows your fears. And He’s never failed in His provision.
2. His Love and Faithfulness
“O you of little faith…” Matthew 6:30
To worry is to forget Who holds your life. It’s to live as if the Father is distant, distracted, or unwilling to provide. But faith remembers: God is near, attentive, and full of lovingkindness.
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” Psalm 37:25
3. His Daily Grace
“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
Worry drags tomorrow’s burdens into today’s strength and steals your peace in the process. Grace is given one day at a time. You will have what you need when you need it.
So What Do We Do Instead?
Jesus gives the answer clearly:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
When our eyes are fixed on Christ, our lives are aligned with His purposes. And provision follows priority.
This verse is Jesus’ answer to our natural tendency to worry about everyday needs… food, clothing, future plans. Instead of obsessing over provision, He calls us to shift our focus to pursuit:
“Seek first…”
The Greek word for “seek” (ζητέω, zēteō) implies an active, ongoing, diligent pursuit. Not a one-time glance toward heaven, but a life oriented around God's priorities.
“…the kingdom of God…”
This means making God’s reign and will the center of our decisions, desires, and direction. It’s about saying, “Lord, Your agenda before mine. Your glory above my gain.”
“…and His righteousness…”
We pursue His character. That means aligning with what’s holy, just, and true. Righteousness is not about performance but living in right relationship with God, through Christ.
“…and all these things will be added to you.”
What are “all these things”? In context, it refers to the basic needs of life (vv. 25–32): food, clothing, provision. Jesus promises that when you prioritize Him, He will take care of what concerns you.
Provision is promised to those who put God’s will first and peace comes when we stop striving and start seeking.
Bible Examples of Those Who Worried but God Provided
1. Elijah (1 Kings 17–19)
Worry: Elijah feared for his life after Jezebel threatened him. He fled into the wilderness, exhausted and depressed, crying out, “It is enough…take away my life.” (1 Kings 19:4)
God’s Response: God didn’t rebuke him. Instead, He sent an angel to feed him, let him rest, and gently restored him. Then God gave Elijah renewed purpose and direction.
Lesson: God meets us in our weariness not with shame, but with provision, presence, and peace.
2. Moses (Exodus 3–4)
Worry: When God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses was riddled with insecurity: “What if they don’t believe me?” “I’m not eloquent.”
God’s Response: God provided signs, gave him Aaron as a helper, and assured Moses, “I will be with you.”
Lesson: God doesn’t choose the confident, He equips the willing.
3. The Disciples (Matthew 14:15–21)
Worry: The disciples were worried about feeding thousands with only five loaves and two fish.
God’s Response: Jesus took the little they had and multiplied it. Feeding over 5,000 with leftovers.
Lesson: What seems small in our hands becomes abundant in His.
Action Points for Faithful Living
1. Anchor your priorities. Review your life. Ask: Is my life shaped more by fear of lack or trust in God’s leading? Are you seeking the Kingdom first?
2. Steward Faithfully. Do what is wise with what you have but do it from faith, not fear.
3. Reject “Doomsday Narratives”. News cycles often feed panic. Anchor your outlook in Scripture, not speculation.
4. Lay it down. In prayer, surrender it to God. Speak it out loud if you need to. Invite Him into the fear.
5. Rest in God's Faithfulness. If He provides for birds and lilies (Matt. 6:26–30), how much more for you?
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Help me to trust You as my ultimate provider and not to lean on my own understanding. Let my decisions be shaped by faith, not fear. Give me peace, wisdom, and contentment in this season.
Today, I surrender every financial worry, every unknown, every future concern. Help me to seek You first, trust You more, and rest in the truth that You are my Shepherd. I shall not want.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
