Peace comes when you let go of control and place everything into God’s hands. God invites you to give it to Him and find rest.

God is good. He is faithful. He is trustworthy in every season of our lives. From the rising of the sun to its setting, His name is to be praised (Psalm 113:3). His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23). His promises never fail (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Because He is this good, we can trust Him. We don’t have to carry the weight of our plans, our goals, or our anxieties. Instead, we can release them into His hands. This is what it means to give it to God.

Why We Need to Give It to God

Surrender is the essence of the Christian life. Jesus Himself said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). To give it to God is to say: “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

When we cling to control, we live with anxiety, because deep down, we know we cannot control outcomes. We cannot control tomorrow (James 4:14). We cannot add a single hour to our lives by worrying (Matthew 6:27). But when we give it to God, we rest in His promises:

  • “Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5).

  • “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).

God upholds all things by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). When you give it to God, you are entrusting your circumstances to the God who rules over history and holds eternity in His hand.

What Situations Can We Give to God?

Scripture shows us that no part of our lives is too big or too small to surrender:

  • A new job or business: We place our work before Him, remembering that promotion comes from the Lord (Psalm 75:6–7). God delights to establish the work of our hands when we commit it to Him (Psalm 90:17).

  • Family and relationships: The heart of marriage, parenting, and even friendships is surrender. We cannot change people’s hearts, but God can (Ezekiel 36:26). We love, forgive, and pray, but ultimately, we trust Him to work.

  • Big decisions: Buying a home, moving cities, choosing a career path, all require discernment. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” When you give decisions to God, you’re saying His wisdom is higher than your reasoning.

  • Finances and goals: Jesus reminds us not to worry about tomorrow but to seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33). Giving it to God means trusting Him to supply all our needs, not according to our bank account, but according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

  • Rest and pace of life: Jesus tells us: “Come to Me… and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Giving Him your rest means trusting His design—that rest is holy, and peace is possible.

In short, every area of life: work, relationships, decisions, money, rest is a chance to practice surrender.

How to Give It to God

Scripture gives us clear steps:

  1. Pray honestly: God invites us to pour out our hearts (Psalm 62:8). He already knows our burdens, but prayer is the way we lay them down.

  2. Release control: This means not only saying “God, take this” but refusing to micromanage the outcome. Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10).

  3. Stand on His promises: We surrender into the arms of a God who has spoken. His Word assures us He is with us (Isaiah 41:10), that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28), and that He provides for His children (Matthew 7:11).

  4. Refuse to take it back: When worry resurfaces, we resubmit. Philippians 4:6–7 tells us to bring our requests to God in everything, and His peace will guard us.

  5. Rest in His care: Surrender leads to peace. Worship in the waiting. Fix your eyes not on what you can’t control, but on the God who never fails.

Jesus in Gethsemane (Luke 22:39–46)
The greatest example is Jesus Himself. Facing the agony of the cross, He prayed, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” In His surrender, salvation was accomplished. By laying down His will, Jesus fulfilled the Father’s plan to save the world.

But remember, giving it to God doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means trusting Him enough to take the steps He calls you to take. Because faith without action is dead, true surrender will always move us toward obedience.

Faith is never idle. James reminds us that “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17). That doesn’t mean salvation is earned by works, salvation is God’s gift, given by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). But real faith always produces obedience. It always moves us.

Noah trusted God, and so he built an ark when it seemed foolish to everyone around him. Abraham trusted God, and so he left behind his homeland, not knowing where he was going. The woman with the issue of blood trusted Jesus, and so she pressed through the crowd, reaching for the hem of His garment. Their faith was not just belief in the mind; it was trust that showed itself in action.

This is why giving it to God is not sitting back, doing nothing, or simply hoping things will change. It is resting in Him while walking forward in obedience to His leading.

It’s trust that says, “I believe You, God,” and then lives in that belief.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I lay my plans, my dreams, and my burdens before You. I trust Your wisdom above mine, Your power above my effort, and Your timing above my schedule. Teach me to pray in secret, to act in faith, and to walk in daily surrender. Thank You for the peace that comes when I give it all to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
